Field notes

A buff-to-apricot cap on a stout, often off-center stem — but turn it over and the hymenium is a dense forest of brittle, pointed spines that rub off easily. There is no toxic look-alike; the spines make it one of the safest beginner mushrooms.

Look-alike risk · low

No dangerous look-alike for a careful forager — the cream spore print and the hymenium confirm it. Still, verify every character before eating.
